Micro-Needling for Skin Rejuvenation

Skin needling is newly popular but not new. Needling the skin to create new collagen has been a European practice for the past two decades. Micro-needling is based on the ability of the skin to self-repair when a wound occurs. Micro-needling creates microscopic pinpoint “wounds” which signals the body to respond by creating new elastin and collagen. It is very safe and unlike lasers, it is a heat-free treatment that is successfully used on all skin types and colors.

What Is Micro-Needling?

The advancement to automated needling is what’s relatively new. At NorthWest Medica, we use a handheld automated device that holds a small sterile cartridge with 12 to 24 needles. The tiny needles pierce the skin at predetermined depths depending on the results you want to achieve.

Topical anesthesia is applied prior to treatment. The device is moved quickly across your skin. Often we will combine specialized medical-grade serums or platelet-rich plasma depending on your treatment goals. Treatments usually take 30 minutes. Downtime can vary from person to person depending on the exact procedure done but you can expect to be red after your treatment, so best to plan a night in.

Here are the advantages of choosing this groundbreaking treatment:

  • Shorter needle penetration enhances product penetration and smooth superficial wrinkles/lines, smoothes skin texture and decreases areas of hyperpigmentation.
  • Longer needle penetration stimulates new collagen and elastin production, tightens skin tone, improves skin texture and diminishes areas of hyperpigmentation and scarring.

What Types of Conditions Does
Micro-Needling Treat?

  • Smooths acne scarring
  • Smooths trauma scars
  • Reverses accumulation of photodamage
  • Improves fine lines
  • Softens roughness
  • Rebuilds collagen
  • Reduces stretch marks

Is Micro-Needling Painful?

Typically, micro-needling is a little uncomfortable with depths needed to achieve therapeutic outcomes but this is managed easily with a topical numbing cream placed on the skin prior to treatment. Lighter treatments are compared to brushing sandpaper across the skin.

How Quickly Does it work?

Because micro-needling is not a particularly aggressive treatment, you’ll need several treatments over a 2-4 month period. Treatment results are cumulative, so you will need to commit to more than one treatment to get obvious results. How Will My Skin Feel After Treatment?

Light treatment levels: Depending upon the depth of the needles used, you may feel as though your skin is warm or hot and sensitive. Light superficial treatments leave the skin red for a day or two.

More aggressive levels: Treatments aimed at changing the skin at deeper planes such as in acne scarring may experience some swelling, pinpoint bleeding (stops almost immediately) and what is called “bronzing” as the tiny pinpoints dry and then slough off.

Your skin may also feel tight. It will be more sun sensitive so you should use the recommended sunblock while your skin heals and you should not use acid or other active products outside of the schedule you will be given.
